The closer to the Divine, the faster our needs are met. That is the message implied by one of the verses in the Qur'an. Allah reminded people to always remember their Lord with various charitable prayers. All of that as a means to draw ourselves closer to God.

Have we ever felt heavy in performing the morning prayer in the morning? Or find it difficult to give charity after receiving a monthly salary? Reluctant to connect with people without disturbing and hurting them? Or how often we feel far from God?

Ibn Atha'illah give wonderful advice in his “Al-Hikam” as follows:

أخرج من أوصاف بشريتك عن كل وصف مناقض لعبوديتك لتكون لنداء الحق مجيبا ومن حضرته قريبا. [19659005] “Get out of your human nature, that is, of all the qualities that oppose your servitude to God, in order to fulfill His call and be close to His presence (witnessing himself truly always before Him).”

Advice it reminds us of the despicable nature of humanity that contradicts servitude to God. what is that like? Nothing but disgraceful qualities such as pride, greed, envy, anger and such. These despicable characteristics are evident as the word of God is in Surah As-Shams verses 7-8:

وَنَفْسٍ وَمَا سَوَّاهَا فَأَلْهَمَهَا فُجُورَهَا وَتَقْوَاهَا.

vile and fearful souls. “

These despicable human characteristics are sub / branches (furu '), while an effect that becomes the main parent is the partiality of people towards themselves (ananiyah). Therefore all that is not good needs to be regulated and educated so that it does not cross its proper limits.

Shaykh Sa'id Ramadhan al-Buthi suggests that these traits are considered despicable in Islam only when crossing the line, like the water source of life passing through the capacity limit is a devastating flash flood; and like medicine should be taken with a dose, but drunk to fill. Therefore, in carrying out Allah's commands and other good deeds we need to minimize these despicable traits.

As Ibn Atha'illah wrote, that is so that he can fulfill His call and be close to His presence. After we pay attention to outward worship (ablution, prayer, and reading the Qur'an), let's increase it to the next level by improving the traits that are inherent in us. Manage yourself and minimize the despicable nature so that it is lighter and easier to carry out its commands.
